Job Opportunity: Business Administrator
Position Type: Part-Time, Contract; Primarily Remote - Chicago based preferred, may include some nights and weekends for in-person events.
About Hearing in Color
Hearing in Color is a Chicago-based non-profit dedicated to amplifying the music and stories of communities that have been historically excluded from traditional musical spaces. Through innovative programming and collaborative partnerships, Hearing in Color works to provide amplification for music-making from communities across the global majority.
The Opportunity
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Business Administrator to assist with duties relevant to our work. This individual will play a vital role in managing the daily operations of Hearing in Color while supporting our mission to foster equity and inclusion in classical music.
The Business Administrator will work closely with the Managing Director, Artistic Director, and Board of Directors and will report directly to the Managing Director.
Key Responsibilities
1. Business Operations
Provide administrative support to Hearing in Color by managing day-to-day operations.
Maintain accurate financial records and ensure timely filing of all business documents.
Collaborate with the Managing Director and Board Treasurer to prepare and file annual tax forms and other required documentation.
2. Financial Management
Draft the annual fiscal year budget for Board approval in collaboration with the Artistic Director, Managing Director, and Treasurer.
Assist with management of fundraisers (e.g., Giving Tuesday, Year-End Giving, Fiscal Year-End Giving).
Manage the organization’s bank accounts, staff payroll, and artist payments.
Work with the Managing Director and Board Treasurer to file all required tax documentation.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess:
Proficiency with Google Workspace, Microsoft Excel, and Word.
A minimum of 3 years of experience in arts administration or a similar field.
Knowledge of budgeting, bookkeeping, and financial reporting.
A bachelor’s degree (arts or business management preferred).
Strong organizational skills with a detail-oriented and collaborative mindset.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Creative problem-solving abilities and the ability to work independently.
Compensation and Schedule
Compensation: This is an independent contractor position compensated at an hourly rate, not to exceed a total of $6,000 over the course of a 13-month contract. The hourly rate will be determined based on experience, and hours worked will be tracked and invoiced monthly. ($23/hr)
Schedule: Flexible hours, with responsibilities concentrated at the beginning and end of the fiscal year as well as during concert cycles. Minimum 10 hrs a week.
